Virgil's Aeneid - new Classics Club course

September sees the return of Classics Club after a summer break. Having enjoyed Homer's Iliad and then Odyssey during the last couple of years, we are now embarking on Virgil's Aeneid.

Classics Club originated in person, with coffee and cake, but during lockdown we moved onto Zoom which has enabled members to join from further afield, such as The Isle of Wight, Northern Ireland, and Belgium. We were even joined by one member while on holiday in Greece, complete with Greek flag flying behind her!

We have now expanded into two groups, one that meets on Monday mornings from 10.30am to midday, another that meets on Monday afternoons from 3pm to 4.30pm. Members are of all different backgrounds, some new to Classics, others returning to Latin and Greek literature decades after first learning the languages at school - all of them share enthusiasm for the Classical World. We read the text in translation but dip into the original language where it adds something special.

Each class includes a presentation of the text, background mythology & culture, followed by a group discussion. The Aeneid course will last approximately 1 year - members can attend just some or all of the terms. Classes are bookable in half-term blocks (e.g. 5 weeks = £50). Please do get in touch if you have any questions or would like to join.

‘The classes are really informative, often revelatory, & so entertaining.’ ‘Caroline’s Classics Club has been a highlight of the week...’
